Phnom Penh, May 4 — Cambodia’s animal health authorities have intercepted a significant shipment of illegal chicken eggs imported from Vietnam, involving a total of 123,000 eggs, in a coordinated crackdown on illegal transportation. The operation was conducted by the Animal Movement Suppression Team of the General Department of Animal Health and Animal Production.
The crackdown targeted trucks transporting eggs without proper permits, which are required for cross-border movement. On the morning of May 4, 2025, authorities stopped and inspected three vehicles suspected of illegal importation through Phnom Dinh Pass, Takeo Province, with the eggs intended for distribution within Phnom Penh.
The first vehicle, carrying 48,000 eggs, was halted near Kursov Roundabout in Prek Kampus commune, Dangkor district. The second vehicle, with 45,000 eggs, was seized on the 3rd Ring Road in Roluos commune, Dangkor district. The third vehicle, transporting 30,000 eggs, was stopped on National Road 2 in Khong commune, Bati district, Takeo Province.
Authorities confirmed that these eggs were imported from Vietnam without proper documentation and permits, raising concerns over potential health risks and unfair trade practices. The seized eggs are now under inspection, and the vehicles along with their contents are subject to further legal procedures.
This operation underscores Cambodia’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal animal product smuggling and ensure food safety standards are maintained across the country. KT
